Introduction

Hellboy is a comic book series by Mike Mignola that was first published by Dark Horse Comics in 1994. It is still running today, and is very popular. Hellboy has over 87 single issues as well as a spin-off series called the B.P.R.D (named for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense), which has 164 issues. These extremely successful comics have lead to two major motion pictures directed by Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: the Golden Army (2008), and a reboot movie starring David Harbour in 2019. The series follows the character Hellboy as he dedicates his life to working with the BPRD to stop evil from destroying the world and proving that, despite his appearance and mysterious origin, he is a force for good.

My website's objective is to prove that Mike Mignola's underlying goal is to demonstrate that Christianity is the true religion and the best way to save one’s soul. I have divided my argument into two different sections, as listed above. Each of these sections is then broken down into different blogs for easy and fun reading. First, I examine the protagonists in Hellboy, discuss their origin stories, and prove their connections to Christian figures and symbolism. The second section examines the villains of Hellboy and explains the way the author (incorrectly) represents them to display Christian ideas on evil and other religions. Finally, I provide a conclusion as to the effects of Mignola's quest to develop a contemporary Christ figure to solidify the Christian way as the only means of saving humankind.

I hope that the website enables readers to explore this fascinating comic universe and that, at the end of your web adventure, you agree with me. —But even if you do don’t share my interpretation, at least I hope you will enjoy the site, and maybe even decide to pick up these amazing books yourself.

Enjoy!
