The disciples of the B.P.R.D.

The B.P.R.D has many faithful followers that help to suggest that Christianity is the true religion and should be be defended at all costs. The most important figure on the team and the closest to Hellboy is Abe Sapien, who is a amphibious man that gets discovered in a test tube underneath a hospital in 1978. His name—which combines an American legend and the Latin word for a “wise” man, as in homo sapiens—comes from an inscription found on the test tube as well as a note with the date of Abraham Lincoln death. This name proves to be the perfect fit for this character, who displays the qualities of honesty and loyalty not only to the B.P.R.D., his home, but to his friend Hellboy. Abe becomes the Leader of the B.P.R.D after the passing of Hellboy and the moving of the team. Readers Later discover that Abe was given his Physical form because of former actions (he worshipped a false idol of the sea and was cursed into this amphibious body and had his memory erased). The function of Abe in the series is to show that no matter one's past transgressions, Christianity is welcoming and you can become a crucial part of the religion and culture, just as Abe has done at the B.P.R.D.

Another intresting character in the B.P.R.D is Johann Kraus. Born in 1946, Kraus discovers his psychic abilities as well as the ability to communicate with spirits at the age of 10. Initially Johann turns to the occult for answers, but feeling nothing Johann turns to the Church and dedicates himself to its mission. Kraus's special talent is the ability to help troubled spirits move on. After a terrible accident, Johann loses his body - the only thing left is an ectoplasmic mist. after seeking help from the B.P.R.D., Johann is able to continue his work with the church and help tormented souls cross from life to death. Within the series, Johann is the physical "proof" that there is a soul. He also demonstrates several aspects of sins. when Johann temporarily gets a body, he struggles with gluttony and lust. These problems demonstrate again that even the faithful can falter. Being a human and being faithful to one's beliefs is always trying.

B.P.R.D also has a fascinating character named Roger the Homunculus. A homunculus is a very small human or humanoid creature. In this case, Roger was an experiment created by a medieval alchemist but abandoned until 1996 when a B.P.R.D. team member discovered Roger hidden away. The agent who found the homunculus was Liz Sherman. Accidentally, Liz gave her power to the homunculus, who then came to life and ran away. A fully alive Roger accidentally hurts Liz and some other agents. Filled with guilt, Roger begs God to end his suffering. But instead of dying or killing himself, he changes his mind and makes a commitment to help Hellboy (who gives him his name) to destroy evil. At a key moment, Roger gives up his new found life to save Liz. The team notices Roger's spirit and vows to find a way to bring him back to life - which they do eventually. Once Roger is brought back, he becomes a very important B.P.R.D. agent and is given his own team. Roger embodies what happens once you find God or the Holy Spirit: even if you were a monster you can still be a force for good - for God. Because of Liz Sherman ( who personifies the Holy Spirit) shares her power with Roger, he is different from other creatures that they face. Liz's spiritual force (or grace) inspires Roger's faith in Christianity.

Abe Sapien, Johann Kraus, and Roger are just a few members of the B.P.R.D. but they are the most noteworthy. Without questions they have the strongest connection to their faith, and are used by Mingola to explore ideas of an active Christianity.
